Combining Your Fieldwork Hours From Multiple Supervisors & Work Settings

Many BCBA candidates work across different ABA settings—homes, clinics, schools, or agencies—and receive supervision from more than one BCBA. The BACB allows you to combine all qualified supervision hours from multiple supervisors as long as:

  1. All supervisors are active BCBAs who meet BACB supervision requirements.

  2. Each supervisor documents supervision separately for the hours they oversee.

  3. You track all hours accurately using a system such as Rethink, Ripley, CentralReach, or personal logs.

  4. All supervision meets the minimum percentage requirements for your selected fieldwork track:

Fieldwork Options

  • Supervised Fieldwork:
At least 5% supervision of total hours per month

  • Concentrated Fieldwork:
At least 10% supervision of total hours per month

Autistic Brilliance Community (ABC) can serve as one of your supervisory providers, allowing you to combine our training hours with the supervision you already receive at clinics, agencies, or school settings.

Restricted vs. Unrestricted Hours: How Your Work Setting Fits In

According to BACB guidelines:

Restricted Hours

Hours spent directly working with a client (e.g., running ABA programs, implementing behavior plans, doing sessions).

Example:
If you work in an ABA clinic or home program delivering direct services, those hours count as restricted.

Unrestricted Hours

These are tasks you complete under BCBA supervision that reflect actual analyst responsibilities, such as:

  • Conducting FBAs

  • Designing treatment plans

  • Parent training

  • Data graphing and interpretation

  • Writing protocols

  • Training RBTs

  • Ethical decision-making

  • Case conceptualization

ABC specializes in providing high-quality unrestricted hours, but can also assist with restricted-combined planning depending on your needs.

Example Scenario: How Hours Can Be Combined

Your situation:

You work in a clinic, and in one month:

  • 50 hours of direct client work (restricted hours)

  • Supervision from that clinic’s BCBA = (ex: 3 hours)

  • You also receive supervision from Autistic Brilliance Community = (ex: 5 hours)

Let’s say your total monthly fieldwork goal is:

130 total hours per month (a typical target for concentrated fieldwork)

How the hours add up:

SourceType of HoursMonthly HoursClinic direct client hoursRestricted50 hrsAdditional unrestricted tasks (from clinic or independent work)Unrestricted~80 hrsTotal Monthly Hours130 hrs

Supervision Required for Concentrated Fieldwork

BACB requires:
10% of 130 hours = 13 supervision hours per month

Supervision Breakdown Example

ProviderSupervision HoursABA Clinic BCBA3 hrsAutistic Brilliance Community BCBA10 hrsTotal Supervision Provided13 hrs ✔ Meets requirement

This means your work hours and supervision can be combined across providers to fully meet the BACB’s monthly requirements.

Another Example: Supervised Fieldwork (5% Requirement)

If you are not doing the concentrated track:

  • 5% of 130 hours = 6.5 supervision hours per month

This could be met by:

ProviderSupervision HoursClinic BCBA2 hrsABC BCBA5 hrsTotal Supervision Provided7 hrs ✔ Meets requirement

You can still combine supervision hours from different BCBAs. What matters is the total percentage per month.

Important: Your Responsibility as a BCBA Candidate

Autistic Brilliance Community will:
✔ Document only the hours completed with us
✔ Provide monthly supervision documentation
✔ Ensure all training aligns with BACB requirements

However, it is YOUR responsibility to:

✔ Track all fieldwork hours accurately

Use platforms such as:

  • Ripley

  • Rethink

  • CentralReach

  • Behavior University logs

  • Your university’s tracking template

✔ Collect monthly verification forms from all BCBAs

Each BCBA who supervises you must:

  • Sign your monthly tracker

  • Confirm only the hours completed with them

  • Be listed on your BACB supervision documentation

✔ Ensure your combined hours meet BACB standards

ABC cannot verify or sign hours completed with other companies—we can only certify our portion.

Why Combining Hours Works

The BACB intentionally allows flexibility because:

  • Many candidates work in multiple settings

  • No one BCBA supervises every aspect of your professional experience

  • A richer combination of restricted and unrestricted experiences leads to better clinical outcomes

Our goal is to help you build strong unrestricted competencies while allowing you to integrate hours from your existing work settings.
